SANTA FE, N.M. — U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján is currently being hospitalized after experiencing a stroke last Thursday morning.

According to his chief of staff, Carlos Sanchez, Luján was experiencing dizziness and fatigue and checked himself into Christus St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Santa Fe. He was later transferred to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque.

“Sen. Luján was found to have suffered a stroke in the cerebellum, affecting his balance. As part of his treatment plan, he subsequently underwent decompressive surgery to ease swelling," Sanchez said.

We talked to KOAT health expert Dr. Barry Ramo to better understand precisely what that means.

We talked to KOAT health expert Dr. Barry Ramo to better understand precisely what that means.

"In the spectrum of strokes, this is an unusual type of stroke. The cerebellum is a fundamental structure in the brain. It has to do with coordination has to do with vision, has to do with speech has to do with movement," said Dr. Ramo.

The senator underwent decompressive surgery to reduce the swelling in his brain and is now resting at UNM hospital, but what does recovery look like after something like this?

"The recovery time depends on how much damage has occurred as a consequence of the stroke," said Dr. Ramo.

Dr. Ramo believes his young age will play a critical role in the road to recovery.

"There are many things in Senator Luján's favor. One is his youth, and he's otherwise been healthy. The fact that they did the surgery, and the surgeon feels that he's going to have full recovery is excellent news," said Dr. Ramo…

he may not want to fall on his sword just to have Manchin vote with the GOP. Plus if he resigns, could setup a special election in the midst of a Republican wave.

That's the trade-off.

At this point, any special election would coincide with the mid-term. The problem for the Democrats is they only have the window of opportunity from now until November.

If they wait for Luján to return (which may be never), then they squander the next nine months being one vote short. If they try to oust Luján to get a replacement vote, they can at least salvage the next nine months.

I think the latter is a better gamble for the Democrats. New Mexico hasn't had a Republican Senator since 2009.

Not necessarily, but they may be able to hide behind the scamdemic awhile, rotating Rinos on Covid pauses and dodge the need to show their true colors for awhile. Considering what Biden might nominate, Mitt might prefer claiming he was patriotically quarantining rather than openly voting for the nominee. Not saying he
wouldn’t if he couldn’t get the nominee through any other way.

Thanks.

Once upon a time the vast majority of folks at FreeRepublic could be counted on to command the moral high ground. No longer. Lately more and more folks here are just plain evil.

It’s not your father’s FR, that’s for sure.
Much unlike two decades ago.

“If they try to oust Luján to get a replacement vote, they can at least salvage the next nine months.”

Lujan isn’t going to be so easily dislodged. He has to remain employed in order to have all of his medical expenses, which are going to be voluminous and continuing, covered by insurance. Good luck to the Dems getting him to quit. He’s too young to retire, so they are stuck with him and won’t be able to get rid of him unless they pull a Marcy Park or Seth Rich on him in some fashion.

“What happens if he’s in a vegetative state?”

He can’t vote....

And he can’t resign, but he’s still alive, so don’t know if they could replace him or appoint someone else without his permission, even though not able to give it. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Wishing for justice to be served on Demonic people who are destroying the world is not evil….. it is moral and correct if one isn’t a complete mental defect.

posterior strokes are the most likely to require decompressive craniotomy . The cerebellum is densly encased by bone and swelling would tend to herniate down the brain stem. It is not that unusual and does not necessarily mean devastating injury

Some were deleteriously affected by the mail-in ballots. (A TRUE war on democracy).

See “2000 Mules” trailer regarding a documentary. It’s very short.

“brain bleeds at that YOUNG AGE are rare even with the “covid issues and shots”.

Funny that “progressives” have proposed an age limit for elected officials. Senator Lujan is 40 years old!
