SANTA FE, N.M. — U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján is currently being hospitalized after experiencing a stroke last Thursday morning.
According to his chief of staff, Carlos Sanchez, Luján was experiencing dizziness and fatigue and checked himself into Christus St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Santa Fe. He was later transferred to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque.
“Sen. Luján was found to have suffered a stroke in the cerebellum, affecting his balance. As part of his treatment plan, he subsequently underwent decompressive surgery to ease swelling," Sanchez said.
We talked to KOAT health expert Dr. Barry Ramo to better understand precisely what that means.
We talked to KOAT health expert Dr. Barry Ramo to better understand precisely what that means.
"In the spectrum of strokes, this is an unusual type of stroke. The cerebellum is a fundamental structure in the brain. It has to do with coordination has to do with vision, has to do with speech has to do with movement," said Dr. Ramo.
The senator underwent decompressive surgery to reduce the swelling in his brain and is now resting at UNM hospital, but what does recovery look like after something like this?
"The recovery time depends on how much damage has occurred as a consequence of the stroke," said Dr. Ramo.
Dr. Ramo believes his young age will play a critical role in the road to recovery.
"There are many things in Senator Luján's favor. One is his youth, and he's otherwise been healthy. The fact that they did the surgery, and the surgeon feels that he's going to have full recovery is excellent news," said Dr. Ramo…

If they don’t replace it with a plate.

While comprising a small fraction of strokes, cerebellar strokes are responsible for a disproportionate share of morbidity and mortality due to their sometimes subtle initial presentation and the adverse effects of reactive swelling in the posterior fossa.

Decompressive craniectomy is normally the last resort
Brain surgery can be dangerous, particularly for someone with a brain injury, so providers try nonsurgical measures first.
People who undergo a decompressive craniectomy are already in critical condition due to a brain injury or stroke. So to a large extent, the length of their recovery depends on the injuries that created the need for surgery in the first place.
Most people will stay in the hospital for several weeks following surgery. It can take months, and possibly years, to recover from the surgery and injury. A person who has had a decompressive craniectomy will require continual monitoring for additional signs of brain swelling, and any signs of infection will need prompt antibiotic treatment.

The Democrats are in a bind: they are either stuck with a 50R-49D effective Senate, or they find a new 50th vote.
With Luján out, Kamala Harris becomes irrelevant unless a Republican is taken out in some way.

Yep, we know all the usual suspects who would be thrilled to fill in as substitute democrats.
Vote Put Off on FCC Nominee After Democratic Senator Falls Ill
The Senate Commerce Committee delayed a vote scheduled for Wednesday for Gigi Sohn, a Democratic nominee to the Federal Communications Commission, because of the illness of a senator.
AND SO IT BEGINS !!!
I've said before that desperate people do desperate things.
We will have to wait to hear the real condition of Luján, but I suspect that Democrats will hear the clock ticking towards November and will not be tolerant of waiting too long to act.

If that’s accurate the dems are gonna toss his ass out and have the governor of NM appoint a new one.

Best GROUND HOG DAY EVER !!
I expect the feckless quartet of Romney,Collins, Murkowski, and Graham to screw us in some way.
Embolic strokes...sure but brain bleeds at that young age are rare even with the “covid issues and shots”. They are usually caused by avm’s or aneurisms and tend to be genetically inherited.
I appreciate your honesty. And I feel the same way.
C’mon, Joe Manchin, switch over to the GOP and take the pressure off Luján so he can have a proper recovery!😁
You’re right. And Romney will volunteer to take the place of the Dim, so that that “compassionate conservative” can help even the playing field.
The chameleon will gladly take his place.
No Principles. No Problem
this does raise the question:
How many Dem senators come from states with a GOP governor?
How many from states where the governor cannot appoint but can only schedule a special election?
Paternal grandfather died from one at 60, not as young an age in 1958 as today but still seemed young. If you were 49 and had this happen would you get anymore COVID shots? Would you retain a doctor who encouraged you to keep getting COVID shots? Is it just me or do we hear virtually nothing anymore about getting a second opinion when it comes to medical advice? Do stooges of Big Pharma know this would slow the shot assembly line down too much?

“I hope he dies.”
The Merciful Lord has given this 100% Pro-Abortion voting record Catholic a wake-up call. Is he intelligent enough to take it? Close calls with death wake a lot of people up. Should resign rather than cast any more evil votes. Pro-abort Catholics like this guy, Biden, Pelosi, etc, are like descendants of Esau selling out a great treasure, Heavenly Glory, for a mess of pottage, passing mammon, power and glory, exactly the temptations offered to Jesus by Satan. And deeply unimpressive, blowhard Biden gets this look on his face lecturing Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearing about the error of citing “natural law” of having to make things simple for the dull. Arrogant. So touchy, that when questioned, rolled out a string of lying absurdities, easily debunked, about his supposedly brilliant academic career.
Recently saw a clip in which while Biden was lecturing Clarence Thomas a voiceover of Thomas could he heard saying: The difficult thing about hearings is that you have to try to look intently at someone who has no idea what they’re talking about.
It means, to use a common, highly technical medical term, "bad".
Wow, just wow. Devine intervention … The Democrats, having complete power (House, Senate, Presidency) may have to settle for Trump’s budget for 2022. And I imagine no more judges will be confirmed.
