Ersie Joyner 'humbled and humanized' after surviving 22 bullet wounds in Oakland shootout

OAKLAND, Calif. - Ersie Joyner III pumps his arms on the treadmill and rolls his hips on a foam roller. He lunges. He extends his body into a plank, crunching his knees to his chest. He pumps dumbbells into the air.

"Let’s get it!" Joyner shouts with a clap. "Whoo!"

It’s no small feat that the 52-year-old retired Oakland police captain is working out at this Hayward gym with his trainer, who also happens to be an associate pastor with whom he studies the Bible every week.

Joyner’s body was pierced with 22 bullet wounds after being shot by four men who also grabbed his necklace, cash and watch while pumping gas at the Chevron station at 17th and Castro streets in the middle of the afternoon on Oct. 21. He also ended up killing one of his attackers.

Joyner shot first. He fired 10 times, emptying his magazine.

Joyner has heard people question his decision.

My only question is how he fired 10 rounds and only hit one bad guy?

Maybe it had something to do with 22 bullet holes in his body.

Too much sampling of his own product? (He’s a cannabis retailer)

If you're pumping gas and someone approaches you with a gun, pull out the nozzle and spray them......

Ah, the ten round mags in Cal.

Hit 22 times. My guess none of those were to a vital organ. Too bad he did not drop the other three too.

Oakland, what a hole. Newark of the west.

F– that N——!” one of the men yelled at Joyner.

Obviously attacked by a group of white supremacists

Yes, the flash from their gun will ignite the fumes ... but how do you avoid being in the conflagration that will cause?

I dunno, but it appears that if accosted by four armed robers, give them whatever they want, then hunt them down later and end their criminal career.

If someone points a gun at you, you have to assume they are going to shoot you.

So if he does, at least there will be severe repercussions to his actions...

Lowlife criminals belong in prison - then the number of bullets used would not be an issue.

“If you’re pumping gas and someone approaches you with a gun, pull out the nozzle and spray them..”

It worked for Raylan Givens.

Gasoline goes vaporized very quickly. If you ever try to styart a trash fire using gasoline, you learn to not do it, because the vapor spreads immediately and when you try to ignite the pile the fireball is massive.

I’m guessing that he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Probably got to feel naked without one, after so many years as a policeman.

U.S. Citizens were walking around with guns for 56 years before the New York City Police Dept. even existed [1845].
Who needed police in NYC for 56 years?
Nobody.
Everybody was carrying.

Nothing has changed in San Francisco in 170 years.
“In 1851, Albert Bernard de Russailh wrote about the nascent San Francisco police force:

As for the police, I have only one thing to say. The police force is largely made up of ex-bandits, and naturally the members are interested above all in saving their old friends from punishment. Policemen here are quite as much to be feared as the robbers; if they know you have money, they will be the first to knock you on the head. You pay them well to watch over your house, and they set it on fire. In short, I think that all the people concerned with justice or the police are in league with the criminals. The city is in a hopeless chaos, and many years must pass before order can be established. In a country where so many races are mingled, a severe and inflexible justice is desirable, which would govern with an iron hand.[2]”-wiki

"Dr. Browder said mortality rates are often high when patients come in with so many gunshots."

They have doctors there, who are wise in the ways of science.
