The Navy confirmed Friday that a photo and video of an F-35 fighter jet that crashed into the South China Sea this week that were shared on social media are both legitimate.
The images were taken by someone aboard the USS Carl Vinson, the Navy said. In addition to investigating the cause of the crash, the Navy is now investigating the leak of the photo and video.
"The ship has assessed that the video and photo covered in the media today were taken onboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) during the crash. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident," the Navy said in a statement.
The 17-second video shared on Twitter shows the F-35 approaching the carrier but doesn't show the flight's attempt to land. The video also includes sounds of the engine and then shows a plume of smoke. The photo shows the aircraft floating in the South China Sea.
The Navy on Monday released a statement that said the F-35 had a landing mishap on deck while USS Carl Vinson was conducting routine flight operations in the South China Sea.
The pilot safely ejected from the aircraft and was recovered via U.S. military helicopter. There were seven total Sailors injured; three required MEDEVAC to a medical treatment facility in the Philippines, and four were treated by on-board medical personnel, according to the Navy's statement.
The Navy intends to conduct an operation to recover the aircraft, according to Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby.

A carrier battle group includes at least two nuclear attack subs. Depending upon the depth of the aircraft, station one sub above the wreck and torpedo anything that approaches until deep-diving subs can recover it.
The sunken aircraft likely has already been blown up into tiny fragments.

The statement by the navy sounds like the navy is going to punish the person who took the picture.
Why? What is there in that picture that is a national security risk?

It’s possible that the released picture/video have embedded metadata that pinpoint the PRECISE location where the incident occurred. That would, of course, be of immense value to our adversaries should they wish to attempt recovery before we succeed with recovery.
That did occur to me but I suspect the navy would dare the Chinese to touch it.
The navy should station a sub or two and a suface vessel at that point which would not leave until the fighter is salvaged or destroyed.
Just like the spy plane that landed in china or the drone that landed in iran?

I hope the people who rammed this incompetent lady through flight training are court-marshalled. But they won’t be. Biden will give them a medal for diversifying the quality of pilots.
Lemme guess, the State Department will instruct the DoD to Stand Down and pull back to Guam. Then in six months will open discussions with the Chinese to request access to “US property abandoned in Chinese territorial waters”.
Was it a real woman or was it a man who says he is a woman. Or do we know?
