The real brake is most people don’t want one and can’t afford one. At this point it is virtue signaling technology. It is not cheaper and definitely not as convenient as ICE transportation. Might be someday.

Ev companies are selling every one they can make.
Ford Lightning has 200,000 paid pre orders and had to stop taking new orders because their factories would not be able to keep up with demand.
Tesla sold 485k in 2020 and 900k in 2021 and could have sold 200k more but had supply chain issues.
This is not virture signaling.. People are finding value in them over ICE for their use.
