Charlotte Bellis, a broadcast journalist, said she has repeatedly tried to return to New Zealand since she learned she was pregnant in September.
She has submitted 59 documents to New Zealand officials in Afghanistan in an attempt to secure an emergency return home, but her bid was turned down and led her to turn to the Taliban, one of the world's most oppressive regimes, for sympathy.
It's a particularly cruel twist of fate for the woman who was revered worldwide for her fearless questioning of the jihadist group's previous record on women's rights.
To add insult to injury, Ms Bellis has warned that pregnancy can be a death sentence in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan because of the poor state of maternity care and lack of surgical capabilities.
Speaking to 1News about her situation, Ms Bellis asked: 'To the NZ Government, I ask what do you want me to do? I have done nothing wrong I got pregnant and I am a New Zealander.
'At what point did we get so bogged down in these rules we’ve come up with that we can’t see that she’s a Kiwi in need of help and she needs to come home?'
Writing in the New Zealand Herald on Saturday, Ms Bellis said it was 'brutally ironic' that while she had once questioned the Taliban about their treatment of women, she was now asking the same questions of her own government.
'When the Taliban offers you - a pregnant, unmarried woman - safe haven, you know your situation is messed up,' she wrote.
Jacinda Ardern has faced a slew of criticism from campaigners and members of the public after imposing strict Covid curbs since the start of the pandemic.

Dummy. Stuff happens to dumb people.
She’s a “journalist” so that means there’s a 98% chance that she’s a liberal/leftist and voted for the people that are now preventing her from returning home.
Some people call that irony. I call it idiocy.
Two lessons here:
1. You get what you deserve when you vote for a liberal or a leftist.
2. Just like humor everything is just and fair until it happens to you.
Where is the human impregnator?
Ms Bellis said she spoke with senior Taliban contacts who told her she would be fine if she returned to Afghanistan.
‘Just tell people you’re married and if it escalates, call us. Don’t worry,’ she said they told her.”
Yeah they said that so they could have western infidel sex slave to pass around.
There is so much “ wrong” about this narrative it is hard to comment
For starters…what does baby daddy have to say about refusal to protect his child by marrying its mother?
PS: if the taliban “didn’t know “ she was unmarried…they do now
Can’t fix stupid. Heard it somewhere-mighta been here.
Couldn’t find a more perfect ‘slapped by reality’ scenario.
New Zealand and Australia have gone daft. It will take a while but eventually Americans will come to realize that they ought not make any more human or material sacrifices defending them. The American line of defense in the Western Pacific should not include New Zealand and Australia. Those cold war treaties are obsolete and no longer in America’s national interest.
What’s the big deal about letting her go back and just do the mandatory quarantine? I hate bureaucrats, I really do.
So what’s the problem here? The NZ government gets shown up as a bunch of authoritarian idiots while the woman who no doubt supports the regime gets to reap the consequences.
It really is jacked up though when the taliban is more accepting of a pregnant woman than the so-called democracy of NZ.
I’m just going to assume that “baby daddy” is one of her “senior taliban contacts.
From Wikipedia:
Charlotte Bellis is a New Zealand journalist who reports for Al Jazeera.[1]
Biography
Bellis was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and attended Selwyn House School.[2][3] She studied journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, and returned to New Zealand in 2009.[4]
She started her journalism career as a television reporter in Christchurch, and later presented Prime News and news programme 60 Minutes in New Zealand. She was made redundant by Prime News in February 2015[5] and took a job with ABC World News in New York the following month.[2][6] In 2017 she started working for Al Jazeera news network in their Doha, Qatar offices.[1][4]
From July 2021, she was stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan and reported on the fall of the country to the Taliban.[2][7][8] At the first press conference given by the Taliban in Kabul, Bellis was one of the three women present. Her asking about women’s rights at that press conference drew international attention to herself.[9] Some days later, she was granted a personal interview with Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a Taliban leader and a member of their Cultural Commission. In the interview, New Zealand was praised for its recent humanitarian support, with NZ$3 million given to two international aid agencies for refugee support.[10]
On 29 August 2021 Charlotte told Radio New Zealand that she would remain in Afghanistan as long as she could.[11] On 14 October 2021, news media reported that she had left Afghanistan,[12] but on 20 October she was again seen reporting live from Kabul.
New Zealand treats their citizens like trash.
As far as I can determine, she is a gutsy foreign correspondent on an adventure, and NZ is blocking her return home to NZ only because of Covid travel restrictions.

I always heard that there were more sheep than people in new Zealand
Trivia: Her name “Bellis” is Latin for “wars.”
I’m glad you asked the question so I didn’t have to. It doesn’t compute - found out she was pregnant in September - when did she go to Afghanistan and if not pregnant before she went, HOW did it happen?
