Australian Open Criticized for Stopping Peng Shuai Protest

The Australian Open is facing criticism over its handing of a small protest against the Chinese Communist Party's alleged mistreatment of tennis player Peng Shuai.

Protestors unfurled a banner reading 'Where Is Peng Shuai' during the match between China's Wang Qiang and American Madison Keys and one of the protesters also wore a t-shirt with the same slogan supporting Peng.

Security guards at the Australian Open on Friday ended the protest, according to Max Mok, who was one of three people involved in the demonstration.

Mok told CNN that security guards initially confiscated the banner citing a tournament ban on political paraphernalia. The guards told the protesters they could stay if they covered up their t-shirts but would not give the banner back.

24 Jan: Daily Mail: Is this the REAL reason the Australian Open banned Peng Shuai t-shirts? The $100MILLION question faced by Tennis Australia as it is slammed for preventing questions about ‘missing’ Chinese star
Viral footage shows an Australian Open fan being ordered to remove her shirt
The woman’s shirt expressed concerns for Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai
Officers tell the activist Tennis Australia does not permit ‘political slogans’
TA doubled down its decision to ban the shirt from the tournament crowds
But organisers criticised as TA has a $100million deal with Chinese sponsor
Australian Open renamed a court 1573 Arena after one of brand’s products
‘They don’t want to jeopardise the deal,’ Sydney radio host Ben Fordham said
By CHARLIE COร‹ and TITA SMITH FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA
The deal is one of the biggest in the tournament’s history, with the Open even renaming a Melbourne Park court 1573 Arena after one of Luzhou’s signature products.
‘The Australian Open tennis has the largest Chinese sponsorship deal in history,’ Fordham said on his 2GB radio show on Monday...

‘I doubt they would have removed these sort of messages if they weren’t getting $25million a year from Luzhou,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.
‘That’s not to speak of the millions they get from deals with Chinese TV companies to broadcast the tournament.
‘It’s a sign of how just valuable Chinese money has become in Australian politics.’...

The five-year deal, reported to be worth $100million, was signed in 2018.
The southern Chinese company took over advertising space from Victorian winemaking giant Jacob’s Creek - the tournament’s previous partner...

A GoFundMe Page was launched on Saturday to help raise funds for activists to distribute Peng Shuai shirts at the Australian Open (Women’s Final Day), garnering more than $6,640 in 24 hours (now reached their $10,000 goal)...

This was a decision by a private company - not the Australian government.

Incidentally the same private company that tried to violate Australia's border laws and which idiotic Americans here on Freerepublic were treating like some massive HEROES OF FREEDOM just over a week ago.

Yes, your are right this time. It is like the NBA and Nike in the USA. I have to remind you, this is same company, Tennis Australia, that so many of the Freepers were heaping praise on the Novak situation. They are terrible.

This was not Australia, you are right though about NZ and Canada. This was Tennis Australia, the same outfit that so many were praising on FR just two weeks ago about trying to Novak in the country.

By the way, I am far more worried about the USA and the CCP influence. If you want to see which why you should worry about the USA's President and family and so many of your USA companies and media being in bed with Xi, you should read โ€œRed Handedโ€ by Peter Schweizer. It doesn't come our until May, but Mark Levin gave a great interview with Schweizer and preview of the book on his past weekend's show. The CCP has so taken over the USA, I don't know that even if the Republicans take over the House and Senate this year, that the USA can be saved with Biden in the office for another 3 years.

Yes, we cheered them when they were for freedom, and we criticize them when they protect communist Chinese interests. “It’s called being consistent”.

First this wasn't Australia, this was Tennis Australia, a private company that so many people were praising on FR just two weeks ago over trying to get Novak to play in the Open.

And this just like the NBA and Nike, NBC, etc in the USA bowing down to the CCP.

By the way, I am far more worried about the USA and the CCP influence. I think you should be far more concerned on how the CCP has taken over the USA government, much of top military command, the media and so many USA companies. I don’t see how you can ever recover. At least Australia is in a cold war with China
