The Washington State Attorney General is filing a lawsuit Monday against Google, claiming it secretly tracks consumer locations.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s lawsuit is set to file at King County Superior Court and says Google continues to track consumers even after they turn off location tracking settings.
"If you go to the trouble on your phone, and actually disable location tracking, you think, well, they're not going to track you anymore," Ferguson said in an interview with KOMO News. "Well, guess what? Google has a back-end way to still track you. Even when you affirmatively check the box saying I don't want you tracking me."
This data is used for Google to profit from, according to Ferguson who said they want Google to disable this back-end way.
"And by the way, there's a reason why Google makes it hard for you to do this, because they profit off it to the tune of billions of dollars, all that advertising about where you're going, they make billions and billions of dollars off that," Ferguson claimed. "So it's good for their bottom line but bad for consumers' privacy.
"So we're going to court because they won't do it voluntarily. We have to go to a judge to get the judge to order them to stop."
I used to take my phone with me all the time. Not any more.
Just remember they also scrub your email and texts at the same time.
Tinfoil works too seriously.
One of our family group, lives 35 miles north of here and the other family lives 40 miles south.
We celebrated Christmas and New Years on 2 January with our families.
In spite of all the phones being turned off during the visit, this issue was discussed.
So our rocket science grandson showed us how the two phones from North had our local businesses and the 4 phones from down south had basically the same local businesses.
All of the phones were Apple. Two of the women said it was a help. Another female relative had flown in from the East Coast. She is an RN and had a new job 40/50 minutes from her East Coast apartment.
Whenever, she drives to work, her IPhone shows her the businesses in her working area. She thinks that is both spooky and handy re finding stores and restaurants in her new work area.
So this location system seems to be part of our smart phones.
This is news!?!?
Dateline or someone showed how it recorded stuff about your movements when in Airplane Mode or even powered off, IIRC.
Ferguson is all about Ferguson becoming President.
Everything—EVERYTHING—he does is measured against that end.
He is the heir apparent to Jay Inslee, and after he serves a term or two as Washington State Governor, he will be running for President.
You heard it hear first!
Here, even
Didn’t the Washington State Attorney General understand he agreed to Google’s Terms Of Service? Ignorance is no excuse!
There is no more privacy anywhere. Neighborhood ring doorbells film you walking/driving to and from your home. Your phone tracks everything else you do.
More than tracking your location, how often is it listening to your conversations? Try turning off the screen of your phone and then randomly discuss traveling to a couple of totally random countries. Don’t search for them in any way, but watch the adds that show up and the things that show up in various non-related internet searches over the next couple of days.
Well, duh. Clearly they’re not hiring / electing/ appointing the brightest and best in Washington.
I LOVED my landline — until AT&T came through and replaced the old technology with fiber optic. Before, we could used the phone during power outages, but fiber requires electric.
I want to move to an old house with outdated technology and get a real phone again.
“I think that even happens when you ‘think’ it is off.”
True. I think it was John Stossel who did a report on this a few years ago. If the spying was that bad then, just imagine how much worse it is now. 5G does super tracking.
If I’m not mistaken, I THINK the technology then even had something embedded that it tracked with the battery out. I don’t understand how that can be, but I seen to remember that. Maybe their own separate battery.
My two-year old Samsung Smartphone has no fasteners, and must be opened using more heat than I care to try.
“Dateline or someone showed how it recorded stuff about your movements when in Airplane Mode or even powered off, IIRC.”
I just posted something that must’ve been the same show. I thought it was Stossel. With the phone off, whomever it was went about his daily business. Later he did a printout off his day. (I didn’t know you could do that, but he did.)
It showed EVERY place he had gone. Once it even reported thet he had been walking at a certain time — which was true.
Bobby “The Thug” Ferguson is the most corrupt, narcissistic, megalomaniacal, power-intoxicated Attorney General in the history of the United States. He filed dozens of lawsuits against PDJT and - using the power of his office - has bankrupted one of his political enemies. He is a disgusting human being (I use the term loosely).
That may have been it.

I think I remember that Stossel report too. And I think some just like a computer board had a second small battery.
“And I think some just like a computer board had a second small battery.”
That’s the only way ... a battery connected to the board that the consumer has no control over. It was tracking with the regular battery removed.
Maybe Faraday cage is the answer — LOL!
Yep, absolutely. We are going to have to go back to the old “I will call you when I get there” check in method we used to have to use in the payphone days. And put our phones on airplane mode and shove them in a Faraday cage in between check ins. :)
“But how do we know if you are OK if we can’t call you on demand 24-7?” Well what did we do before cellphones? And we actually lived through it just fine without that technological umbilical cord. lol
