A view from inside Ukraine — tense but people are ready to resist Russia
New York Post ^ | January 21, 2022 | Nolan Peterson

It’s a scary time here in Ukraine. That’s saying something, because the past eight years haven’t been easy...

Heavy artillery, rocket attacks, trench warfare, a civilian airliner shot from the sky. In September 2014, I witnessed tank combat outside the coastal city of Mariupol.

Today, Ukrainian troops remain in daily combat against a combined force of Russian regulars and local conscripts drawn from the Russian-occupied territories in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region...

We are in the midst of Europe’s most dangerous moment...

One line of thinking is that Russian forces would execute a swift, overwhelming strike meant to inflict massive...losses on the Ukrainian military that would spur a political capitulation...

In the worst scenario, some 100 Russian battalion tactical groups would invade...

At least one-third of Ukrainians, according to recent polling, are ready to take up arms and resist a Russian invasion by force. And this isn’t bluster. After almost eight years of conflict, Ukrainians harbor no naive or romantic impressions about what war is.

When Russia invaded the Donbas in 2014, Ukraine’s regular armed forces could muster only a few thousand combat-ready soldiers...Ukrainian civil society launched a grassroots war effort, forming a coalition of civilian volunteer battalions. These units are made up of men and women, young and old, often with little or no military experience, including both native Russian and Ukrainian speakers from all regions of the country. Many of these volunteers learned how to be soldiers while in combat...

This grassroots effort reversed Russia’s unconventional invasion of the Donbas and fought the war to a stalemate, which persists to this day...

Ukrainians have the will to fight. Western support, whether through diplomatic gestures or weapons, signals to Ukraine’s soldiers and civilians that they haven’t been forgotten and that their dream of democracy and freedom is worth fighting for...

Putin is threatening invasion of neighboring Ukraine, a country of 44 million people. Ukraine is not a NATO ally, but Putin is also demanding NATO withdrawal from all eastern European countries: Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and North Macedonia. In response, the United Kingdom flew in to Ukraine 2,000 NLAWS, a disposable anti-tank launcher. Estonia is providing Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank weapons while Latvia and Lithuania are sending Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and other equipment including thermal sights.

While I don’t think Putin should dictate anything to anyone, especially NATO, I do think this is just yet another foreign military quagmire we DON’T want to be in at all, much less the nuclear confrontation possibility with Russia issue.

It will be interesting to see how Biden responds, I think it was William Gates, Defense Secretary under Obama who said Biden had been wrong on every foreign policy issue for the last 40 years, putting the odds on Biden getting this issue correct at about 0%.

IMO, the US public wants absolutely no part of a ground war with Russia and Russia would also be dumb to want that.

I would continue to support Ukraine with weapons and support, I would provide them with real time intelligence, satellite imagery, etc.

I would encourage and allow other NATO members to supply weapons and support to Ukraine.

The fight if it comes has to be between Ukraine and Russia.

Finally I would keep telling Putin, no we will not withdraw from current NATO members and I would not expand NATO to include Ukraine but that would be kept as a bargaining issue, basically don’t expand to include Ukraine but don’t agree to it formally with Putin.

We’ll then see how committed to Ukraine Putin really is, even if they can devastate Ukraine, it would come at a really high price, is he willing to risk that, we’ll see.

My family is Ukrainian. I’m against sending US troops.
But the Ukrainians don’t need them. The generation of military age has been brought up to be UKRAINIANS. They have no memory or desire to bu under the Russian thumb. They need weapons and logistic support.
Putin may well be able to invade a large piece of Ukraine.
Given support to Ukrainians he will then face long guerrilla war.
Most Americans do not realize that Ukrainians resisted the Soviet Union after WW2 until the mid 1950’s without any support from the West.

Ukraine should continue to be supplied with weapons so that they can make the Russians hurt bad if they invade.

If Russia can sit there and covertly provide advanced weapons technologies to the North Koreans or the Iranians (the Japanese recently stated that they believe the recent swift upgrade in North Korea’s missiles was thanks to Russian technology transfers), we should be able to do the same for Ukraine.

Ratta tat tat boom boom
The drumbeat for war.
Once again old men in dark suits are planning the sacrifice of young men & women in bright shiny uniforms for their endless quest for power.

Russia is demanding full withdrawal from NATO countries as well, such as Romania.

You need to understand that these demands are impossible and are just a pretext for war.

The United States could demolish NATO completely tomorrow, and Russia would probably respond by blowing up some of their own apartment buildings (like they did before, blaming Chechens, with FSB getting caught in the act of planting bombs by local police), and then invading Ukraine anyway. Then they'd to the same to Poland, Romania, Estonia, etc.

Flowing weapons to the Ukrainians to help them defend themselves would be the appropriate measure, but nothing beyond that, especially with the mix of demented feebs and mental midgets running the show in DC these days.

The USA needs to give Ukraine the weapons and intelligence support that would allow them to put up a credible resistance to the Russians and make it extremely costly for Putin to invade but US Ground Troops is a no go for everyone

That’s a lot if true and would be a big problem for Russia.

Would you mind citing any of Putin’s threats to invade of late? It seems like wag the dog by the most incompetent administration in the history of the US so far.

Why the hell Russia needs to invade Ukraine, let alone Poland? Would you explain finally? Donbas voted to reunite with Russia 8 years ago. What made Russia decline it but accept Crimea?
I understand that in your “1984” world common sense is a scarce commodity, but the cognitive dissonance is just too strong here.
The country you are squatting in is currently run by the most incompetent administration in history, covering its shortcomings by creating a crisis in Europe.
It needs to care about the American border, to keep the wetbacks like you out.
Europe needs to care about its issues without outside interference.

This reminds me that as you and Russia repeatedly call Ukraine a "Nazi" country, the Jews in Ukraine report that the anti-semitism and racism actually comes from Russian media, the "green little men" and the so-called separatists.

“Russia is demanding full withdrawal from NATO countries as well, such as Romania.”

BS. But if you believe it, then YOU go join the Ukrainian Army.

Let OUR Army defend our own open border.
