Airstrikes kill 70 people and knock out internet in Yemen

At least 70 people were killed and more than 130 injured when an airstrike hit a detention center in Yemen on Friday... as the Saudi-led coalition continued to ramp up its deadly offensive on rebels in the war-torn nation.

Another airstrike early Friday hit a telecommunications building in the strategic port city of Hodeidah, causing a nationwide internet blackout, according to NetBlocks, an organization that tracks network disruptions...

The Iran-back Houthi rebels, who control much of Yemen, blamed the Saudi-led coalition for the strikes. CNN has reached out to the coalition for comment. A coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched an offensive in 2015 to restore Yemen's internationally recognized government, after it was ousted by the Houthis. The coalition has intensified its attacks in the wake of a Houthi missile and drone strike in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi earlier this week.

CNN’s juxtaposition of 70 dead AND NO INTERNET is ironic and kind of funny.

- Sure dozens have died, BUT WHAT’S EVEN WORSE IS I CAN’T GET ON INSTAGRAM!

Don’t think it can’t happen here. There’s already been a bomb attack on a communication hub in Nashville on Christmas 2020. There are government functionaries who would LOVE to take down the Internet in the South.

Who wants what in Yemen?
I’m guessing the strike is from the Saudi’s.
Do they want to control this land for strategic reasons?

“I’m guessing the strike is from the Saudi’s.”

Correct.

“Do they want to control this land for strategic reasons?”

They want the Houthis to stop attacking their energy infrastructure.

The Houthis are Iranian surrogates. They recently used drones to attack UAE oil facilities. Recently, Biden took them off the terrorist watch list, no doubt to curry favor with Iran so that the US can rejoin the JCPOA.

It will be interesting to see the Biden reaction re arms sales to the UAE and the Saudis.

“ What the heck is going on?”

Satan is what’s going on. Darkness is moving across this planet. Jesus is our only hope.

Who wants what in Yemen?

It is positioned as a choke point for the Persian gulf, so there is that if nothing else.

The Yemenis have staged numerous border incursions over the years. North aYemen used to be run by Communists. South Yemen was freer and more pro-Saudi. Iran has come in to stir up hatred against the Saudis, their arch enemies. The Iranian involvement has raised the stakes in the region.

The Iranians have engaged in inciting the Saudi Shi’a who make up about a third of the population of the Eastern Province. Iran wants to take down the House of Saud. Having spent 5 years in the Kingdom, including during the entire first Gulf War, it is hard to understate the hatred between the Saudis and the Iranians.

It’s about time the Saudis started to take it to the Houthis. They may need to invade Yemen to clean up ultimately.
