Russia doesn’t want to have to provide pay, benefits & pensions to Ukrainians, which it will have to if it takes over an area. They just want Ukraine to stay out of NATO, like we don’t want Russian/Chinese troops in Cuba with missiles pointed at us. Not that complicated.
It’s the same deal we made for Austria, to get the Russians out of their half of the country. That’s why they aren’t a NATO member.
