Sadiq Khan plots to hit motorists in London with 'pay per mile' charges to force drivers of polluting vehicles onto public transport

Sadiq Khan was accused last night of clobbering hard-up motorists with his plans to charge them by the mile in London.

The capital’s Labour mayor wants road pricing to force those who drive petrol or diesel cars to switch to public transport, walking, cycling or electric vehicles ‘where necessary’.

He said he is ‘not willing to put off action’ to hit climate targets.

Research commissioned by Mr Khan found that a 27 per cent reduction in London’s car traffic is required by 2030 to meet net-zero ambitions.

A report by City Hall said road user charging would be a ‘simple and fair scheme’ that could replace existing fees such as the Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone.

But motoring groups including the AA and RAC said policies should focus on helping motorists get electric vehicles, rather than punishing those who cannot afford them.

AA president Edmund King said: ‘We need to encourage the uptake of cleaner, greener vehicles.’

The RAC’s Nicholas Lyes said: ‘These proposals would create massive financial challenges for individuals, families and businesses who run a car in London.’

“Coming to a town/city near you.”

A company I worked for bought us RFID badges but swore they wouldn’t be using any of the several tracking outputs that showed how much time employees spent and where they spent it. But shortly after management demonstrated they were indeed using those tracking packages as they left a copy on a printer, bosses asked about bathroom visits, and they attempted to fire employees based on time spent smoking. The point is, if the technology is available then it will be used. Your phone can tell your position and even how fast you’re moving moment by moment. Your newer cars are connected via satellite and are sharing huge amounts of data. We aren’t even aware of these things. Converting this data into a charge by the mile would be easy. Therefore, it will be done.

Expect a LOT of medical exemptions.

Forcing people to use mass transit is a sign of multiple failures:
-You have a mass transit system that sucks so much that people don't use it willingly.
-Your city can only regress backward instead of increasing the number of parking decks and enhancing roadways in and out of the city.
-Your city has exceeded peak capacity and as such is not a viable location for new businesses.

So, what is the source of electric power in London? Those EVs won’t charge themselves.

Before cars there was an immense manure problem in big city streets. No one could figure out how to solve the problem and went about scaring everyone about how bad things will get in the years to come. Then the horseless carriage came along and manure piles slowly disappeared.

Politicians can’t think out of the box, they hear they need a solution and just keep banging the hammer in the same place. Someone like Elon Musk is going to come along with a practical replacement for gasoline vehicles. I’m not confident in electric as that solution, but something will come along when it is really needed.
