Russia has dismantled ransomware crime group REvil at the request of the United States in an operation in which it detained and charged the group's members, the FSB domestic intelligence service said on Friday.

The arrests were a rare apparent demonstration of U.S.-Russian collaboration at a time of high tensions between the two over Ukraine. The announcement came as Ukraine was responding to a massive cyber attack that shut down government websites, though there was no indication the incidents were related. read more

The United States welcomed the arrests, according to a senior admininstration official, adding "we understand that one of the individuals who was arrested today was responsible for attack against Colonial Pipeline last spring."

REvil has not been associated with any major attacks for months.

And all of a sudden they conveniently attack Ukraine.

That would be a favorable outcome - never ever go into a Russian prison as and inmate ...

I firmly believe computer hacking should be a capital offense.

Apparently, it is already a Capitol Offense.

Cheers,

been thinking about the meaning of this.

my theory:

(1) random things do not happen, especially around Putin (2) the entire issue of computer hacking is not significant, both altogether and specifically with Russian hackers — more hack attacks originate in the US and China (and loads of hackers are based in the Ukraine too, and don’t forget Greater Nigeria) (3) the issue of computer hacking was stated to be the one Biden wanted to discuss in a prior meeting with Putin — of course, I doubt this was the main course on the menu...

thus

this is likely a gift to Biden — now he can state that his negotiations were very successful (never mind that this is not a big issue!). The timing suggests that this to make it easier for Biden to positively respond to the Putin’s “ultimatum”, he can use this to alleviate unavoidable accusations of weakness.

Of course, no claim of this being true.

PS. Realized something... there were crazy hacking stories at the time of the election in 2020..... I think the ended up simply forgotten?

It is not really a gift to Biden. Hacking is a legal, not a political issue.
Unsubstantiated bitching about Russian hacking puts you nowhere.
Not long time ago Putin said that if the FBI wanted hackers prosecuted they need to present a case, like who, when, where and how was hacked.
The media outrage over this comment alleging that only the media chatter is enough to deal with the hackers “because Putin knows better” leaves one wondering which place is stronger in the rule of law, the West or Russia.
I guess FBI finally managed to convert empty statements into proper paperwork, hence the result.
Nobody likes hackers in Russia regardless of where do they commit their crimes. If there is the case they are going to prison.

Gift in the sense that this is something Biden can claim as a success in the international relations — or result of his pressuring Putin.

Otherwise, agree.
