2300 US Covid deaths yesterday.
About 100 or so more and the count will equal the highest Delta count we saw in Sept, said to be all Delta then.
So how can this be with an allegedly weaker variant? A couple of ways, but themselves not strong explanations.
1) It’s winter. Furnaces bring people indoors to breathe heavy dose of virus. Not a lot of that going on, tho.
2) The vax date is getting older. Boosting hasn’t been aggressive.
3) Their sample was pretty narrow. Strictly California, I think it said. No mention of age distribution, which is generally the absolute most important parameter. If all the Omicron samples were young, they aren’t going to die even from Delta.
I just do the numbers. South Africa had 181 dead yesterday. It’s summer there. They are supposed to be about 100% Omicron by now. 181 is about 15X more than a typical daily death count in the weeks before Omicron arrived.
Russia’s peak and decline is decidedly not steep. At all. I saw a brief article saying they are mostly Omicron there now, too.
The US is in its 5th month of 1000+ daily deaths on the 7 day average. This is 150K deaths in less than half a year, and the vast majority are 65+. A typical 65+ death year in the US is 1.7 million. Add 400K to that and you have an increase of 23% over the usual 65+ death count. This nudges towards numbers that start to affect even 40 yr old life expectancy, though the opioid death numbers probably hit LE for 40 yr olds harder.
Post extinction I plan to organize a select few to join me for cake. None of you will be invited.

There were two peaks in South Africa. At the peak of the original and the peak of the delta the daily death rates were triple and quadruple what they are now. Those are where you would make your comparisons if you were honest and not peddling fear porn and doom.
