You are right, and thanks for the correction. I think the tailban are trying to garner world attention and western sympathy to get some on their side, in this case in a stupid way, just my two cents.

I think the Taliban want “western respect” not necessarily sympathy but I really don’t give a dam if they do and do not think they have or will earn it. Power by force is their central tenant of operation and that is not going to change. Thinking they will fundamentally change is like the twin pretenses of (1) that within the ruling Mullahs of Tehran there are actual “mdoerates” or (2) that economic and financial intercourse with Communist China will lead to political “liberalization” in mainland China. Those two pretenses have continually compromised U.S. foreign policy. We should have no similar pretenses about the Taliban.
