Having lived in Melbourne, the majority of my life, the Australian Open really isn’t that big a deal to most people. The biggest international sporting event by far is the Boxing Day test. The Australian Open has a decent following but most people don’t really care that much. If Australians won it all the time, there would probably be more interest but we don’t much like sports where we don’t dominate.

I am not sure about Boxing Day Test. You might be surprised that cricket is becoming less popular. The Melbourne Cup might be the most popular country-wide, even though horse racing is becoming less popular too. O

Having never been to Australia, the AO is the most famous thing I know
or care about as far as Australia is concerned.
