First Elon Musk, now Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg’s company, Meta (formerly Facebook), announced it would lease offices in a massive new building in Austin, Texas. Big tech companies, who cut their teeth and built empires in California, are fleeing the state and relocating to Texas. It's almost as if high taxes, stifling corporate regulations, and out-of-control housing costs are unattractive to businesses and long-term sustainability. Who knew?
The Austin Business Journal was among the first to report on Meta’s move.
“Months of speculation have come to an end as California-based Meta Platforms Inc. — the parent company of Facebook — recently leased the entire commercial half of Sixth and Guadalupe, the 66-story high-rise under construction downtown that will be Austin’s tallest building when finished. The social media company has also pledged hundreds more jobs in the Texas capital,” the Austin Business Journal reported.
“The lease is the largest ever in Downtown Austin,” Austin ABC-affiliate KVUE reported. It will be located in what will eventually become Austin’s tallest building.
The California-to-Texas “techs-odus” is becoming a trend. Other tech companies such as Oracle, HP Inc., and 8VC have recently relocated to Texas. As of November 2020, 35 major companies had relocated or opened new sites in Austin, according to the Austin Chamber of Commerce.

Tranquila, por favor-BTW, Gov Abbott actually reads and pays attention to what the citizens of Texas have to say-do what I just did-drop him-and your congressman-an email with your concerns, rather than stressing over what may happen in Austin-the damned place has been a liberal hellhole since the early 70’s-but it was more fun then-not as many homeless, not as many big tech companies inflating the real estate prices or crapping up the place-now it is a total lost cause-I say move the state capitol to Ft. Worth, Amarillo-even El Paso-keep Austin as a contained/walled tourist attraction and increase the hospitality tax on all the hotels/motels, B&Bs, and all other overnight accommodations there-might as well get some money out of the place-it is the SanFran of Texas...
No it’s not. Texas being a purple state is a myth. We just have to keep the voter fraud from getting out of hand and we are very red.
More like planned tax dodges-they increased the taxes in Cali-now they want to go where it is cheaper for them to live-like Texas and Florida-since they are part of the 1% they want to tax into oblivion...
Does Austin still actively recruit tech transplants? I recall the ‘boston to austin’ tech recruitment initiative in the late 1990s.
An other swamp rat wants to have more say in Texas.
KLEEP HIM OUT!
There goes Texas from red to blue...following Colorado
Build a fence keep him out!!!
NO, MAKE HIM STAY PUT! HE HELPED CREATE THAT MESS, HE CAN SLEEP IN IT!
Zuckerberg will most definitely bring his politics with him as will all his people. It is not good for Texas and the move is to Austin a city much more friendly to leftist fantasies than, say Houston.
