China locks down 3rd city, raising affected to 20 million

A third Chinese city has locked down its residents because of a COVID-19 outbreak, raising the number confined to their homes in China to about 20 million people.

The lockdown of Anyang, home to 5.5 million people, was announced late Monday after two cases of the omicron variant were reported. Residents are not allowed to go out and stores have been ordered shut except those selling necessities.

Another 13 million people have been locked down in Xi’an for nearly three weeks, and 1.1 million more in Yuzhou for more than a week. It wasn’t clear how long the lockdown of Anyang would last, as it was announced as a measure to facilitate mass testing of residents, which is standard procedure in China’s strategy of identifying and isolating infected people as quickly as possible.

The lockdowns are the broadest since the shutting down of Wuhan and most of the rest of Hubei province in early 2020 at the start of the pandemic.

Hanta outbreaks in the spring in Colorado as people clean up cabins after winter.

like any sane person, I hope he is incorrect. the timing of such a fever appearing there would pretty much have to be treated as intentional release of a different disease and as stage 2 in the bio-war we may well already be in.

at this point I am undecided on what omicron was intended to accomplish - less virulent, more contagious vaccine-type virus or simply stir up chaos by infecting everyone vaccinated. who worked on it? there is no way that mutation set occurred naturally.

the problem is anyone could release a virus in china.

the US apparently helped fund the covid virus’ development.

another way of putting it - you can release a virus anywhere, pretty much. you don’t have to do it in your home country (though accidental leak is a real possibility. twice?)

Bird flu again, possibly. Or a brand-new bi0w@rf@re experiment with pangolins and hedgehogs.

Well, China is locking down entire cities. If the virus isn’t easily transmitted, why are draconian lockdown measures necessary? Why prevent people from leaving their homes? This is only one reason why our athletes shouldn’t participate in the Genocide Games.

Why not? It is not an unusual mutation set. Granted that many FReepers are incorrect in believing viruses in general mutate in this direction. Viruses that kill off their carriers at a high rate B4 their carriers can infect many others tend in this direction, but, otherwise it is rather random. Original COVID's low CFR and method of spread make it just about as likely that CFR would go up, be unchanged, or go down. OTOH, greater infectiousness is almost always a "positive" for the virus.

IMO, "Omicron" was just random. While it is true most mutations are insignificant or harmful to the organism reproduced, even with older COVID variants we had many billions of mutations per hour of a not very stable virus.

China has not said they are locking down for Hanta virus. Nor would that be necessary or effective.

Most likely they are trying to keep Omicron / COVID out of the Olympics. A strong surge there would be a huge black eye for them.

Sounds like you get it from rodents over there so hopefully not easily transmittable. I've seen some lockup videos where they're supposably welding people into their apartments again. Looks like fear porn to me. They'll probably say that the Phizer jab will take care of it.

They are locking down for the Rona , China has a zero covid policy. They lock down the whole city then test everybody bar none and quarantine the positives and every one they had contact with even remotely. They have omicron cases in these three cities and are following chairman Xi zero covid edict as simple as that. The Hanta virus is incidental to the zero covid edict.

the issue is twofold - 1) lack of any sequencing history of a direct ancestor of it after 18 or so months ago and 2) the ratio of synonymous to asynonymous mutations is so skewed as to defy odds.

And China has a population of a massive 1.4 Billion, 20 million is but a tiny percentage.

1.4% is a sizeable portion of your entire population... The US equivalent would be shutting down Vermont, N Dakota, S Dakota, Alaska, Wyoming, AND Delaware.
Or, to shut down a single State, it'd be Colorado, Alabama, or S Carolina.
