1922: Leonard Thompson, 14, receives the first injection of insulin, at Toronto General Hospital. Insulin was discovered by a research team composed of Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and J.J. Macleod.
The discovery of insulin is fascinating! Michael Bliss wrote a book “The Discovery of Insulin” about this. Great story about a drug that has saved millions.
Imagine what a medical breakthrough that was!
Husband’s family has been inflicted with Diabetes type I throughout the generations - he told me his elderly relatives said before Insulin, Diabetics were prescribed catnip as a remedy.
All of them had short lives until insulin was available.
Insulin is not a drug but a hormone naturally produced by the pancreas but not in type 1 diabetics.
I stand corrected.
