You don’t need to ever have been a judge to be on the Supreme Court. You don’t need to have gone to law school either.
That’s where the Senate is supposed to come in and question the qualifications of a justice.
At this point, I think just about any local sheriff could do a better job on the SC than another Ivy Leaguer.
