A case of African swine fever has been detected in a wild boar in Italy, news agency ANSA said Friday, raising fears of a blow to the country’s meat industry.

Highly transmissible and fatal for pig populations, the viral disease does not present a risk for human health, but poses serious repercussions for pork producers.

Italy is home to 8.9 million pigs, according to the national statistics office.

ANSA said the case was detected after tests on the carcass of a wild boar in Ovada in the northern Piedmont region.

The regional research body reported to have carried out the tests could not be reached for confirmation after hours Friday.

African swine fever has existed in Africa for decades.

African Swine Fever is the nuclear weapon of animal diseases ,

It’s extremely contagious to pigs. Doesn’t harm people .
If it gets in the US it will be a very bad day.

It can be transmitted via meat, even cured meat and bone marrow, and also by ticks.

It has been in Sardinia Italy for a while.

Uh oh.

Though I think it has been in the EU already, this crap is no joke. It destroyed the Chinese pork herd a few years back.

“Case of African swine fever reported in northern Italy”

Thanks for reminding me to not bring my African swine to Northern Italy (unless I bring aspirin with me).

Not the first time ASF has made it into Europe. China is right now recovering from an epidemic of ASF and it has decimated the hogs in Cuba. If it gets into the US it will be devastating as we have a feral hog population that will make it difficult to contain the virus.
