I have no doubt that the internal combustion engine will be replaced over time with cars being powered by electricity, fuel cells, or some other technology. But pressure by the USG instead of the marketplace is not the way to go. It will be a disaster.

For a historical example look at the Aral sea in Russia. Stalin ordered massive Cotton production, this continued under Khrushchev, he of the famous shoe pounding speech at the U.N. and now that area is a natural disaster, oh well, nature will restore itself in one way or another over time

Reminds me of a George Carlin routine where he opines that he doesn’t believe the naysayers who talk about the death of the planet. He said that the planet will survive long after Man has gone.
