Tony Blair, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Baroness Amos are to be appointed as members of the Order of the Garter, England's oldest and most senior order of chivalry.

The former prime minister now becomes known as Sir Tony.

The appointments are the personal choice of the Queen, with up to 24 "knight and lady companions".

Baroness Amos, a former Labour cabinet minister, becomes the first black member of the order.

The ceremonial order, founded in 1348, is a recognition of significant public service, made as the personal gift of the monarch.

Mr Blair becomes Sir Tony from 1 January, as he joins the order as a "knight companion".

"It's an immense honour," he said.

He said it had been a "great privilege" to have served as prime minister, adding: "I would like to thank all those who served alongside me, in politics, public service and all parts of our society, for their dedication and commitment to our country."

He says he will be "Sir Tony" rather than Sir Anthony,

You would be hard pressed to find anyone in the UK who actually admits to liking “Bliar”.

Nobody likes him, but he’s a former Prime Minister, that normally gets you a Peerage. Formerly that was a hereditary Earldom, but these days it usually gets you a Life Peerage (a Barony that goes extinct when you die).

Blair’s wife Cherie is a notorious left wing republican (anti-monarchist) so I’m guessing the Knighthood is a compromise. The Garter is the senior order in England (In Scotland the senior is The Thistle) and is what Churchill was awarded after World War II.

Churchill was offered a Dukedom as a Victory Honour after the War, but he declined it as he wanted to stay in the Commons. He got The Garter instead. Since Blair is also a former PM, I’m guessing it was decided to give him the Garter instead of a more junior order like the Bath in order to not rank him lower than Churchill.

Ain’t no biggie. Elizabeth hands out titles like candy - about 70 every year across different groupings with Brits and foreigners. Sir Tony now shares the title with Sir Elton John, Dame Twiggy, Elizabeth Taylor and he now shares the title with Sir Elton John and Dame Twiggy, Elizabeth Taylor and, of course, Bill Gates.

Liz knighted Bill Gates in 2005. Is she still proud of that appointment?

How can this be? According to Megham, the Queen and the Royal Family are "Racist".

Sir Tony was one of my favorite elitist drunks. His minders would have to go fetch him and pry him off the tony lizard lounge chairs and carry him back to 10 Downing to perform his ministerial duties after sunrise.

His daily drinking sessions would involve guzzling a liter of wine and chasing it down with a half bottle of whisky. Tony was the Popeye of liquor - pop the cork and down it goes in a gulp or two. For all these faults, one had to admire his stoic imprudence made possible by his cast iron guts.

He blamed his drinking on the uncontrollable knaves and scalawags populating the English parliament.

While Sir Tony was on one of his drinking jags, he suggested triggering the unique British 18th century legal doctrine of impressment (the kidnapping) of Indian curry chefs to fill the shortage of these skilled chefs in the English restaurant sector. It came to naught, though, as the knaves and scalawags suggested that a better course was to simply offer them high wages in order to lure the treasured curry chefs to Britain.

So when you’re having a drink tonight, know full well that Sir Tony could drink you under the table with minimal effort.
