Yeah, the best way to know if it is a conspiracy theory or not is question whether it would require a huge amount of people to invoke, and all of them would keep it secret.
Keeping something horrible a secret by a lot of people is highly unlikely.
The worse it is (like child sacrifice, poisoning millions, Alien abduction of thousands) the more likely it isn’t real.
