The parents of a teenage girl killed by an alleged Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer’s stray bullet tearfully recounted the tragic incident. In a press conference in Los Angeles Tuesday, the family of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana Peralta said they are devastated by her death.
Valentina was killed last Thursday after allegedly being shot by a stray bullet fired by police officers in a Burlington Coat Factory store while the officers were shooting at an armed suspect. The girls father, Juan Pablo Orellana, said he cannot put into words the loss of his only biological daughter.

Ben Crump.
Really can’t stand that guy.
Too little to go on, just a dead girl. And an armed perp. You cant save everybody when shtf. Just saying, life aint perfect for anyone.
Terrible story. Sure the parents are going to milk the heck out of this (why Ben Crump is there) but this was a tragedy all around.
He makes Jackie Chiles look legit.
The cop needs to be fired and go to jail for murdering an innocent young girl, period. If people can be jailed for reckless driving while mishandling a car and then killing someone, then a cop should be jailed for reckless shooting of a firearm that kills an innocent girl. If I were the parent of that girl, I would want the killer to die.
A tragic, heartbreaking accident, but as soon as local TV showed the father calling the police “criminals” and demanding “justice for Valentina”, I say FU!! They are Chilean - legal? who knows? - but now it’s not about their loss, it’s all about how much money they can extort from LA.
I saw the video, There was no reason to have an M16/AR15 in a mall store and firing 4 times at 30 feet with a .223 for a man with a bicycle weapon. sorry can’t justify the overkill
First off cops have indemnity from civil suits and if the shooting was justified also indemnity from criminal charges. While unfortunate things like this happen when actively engaging a violent suspect. In this case it seems a round fired at the suspect missed hit the floor and ricocheted upwards and into the wall of the stall where the girl was hiding. It is also possible the round penetrated the suspect then hit the floor and ricocheted but it has been confirmed the round was a ricochet. It will be nearly impossible to argue in court that a round fired at an actively violent suspect that ricochets off the floor into a wall then into a person is civilly liable let alone criminal sorry that’s how the law is set up to work. Deal with criminal first who is actively violent and an immediate threat to society. He was beating and dragging a woman training blood behind her you ABSOLUTELY shoot to kill the suspect in that case it’s LEO APP at that point if there is collateral damage it happens sometimes.
I totally agree.
M16 in hand, the cop at one end of the aisle, perp at the other, fires multiple rounds without thinking about the where the rounds were going
From 30 feet the M4 platform is exactly what you use to neutralize an active treat. Good thing you are not law enforcement your lack of knowledge of procedure is a dead give away. I spent 11 years at the Fed and local LEO levels I absolute with zero hesitation would have ventilated this guy with my M4 at 30 or more feet. Collateral damage happens it’s part of active situations. All the warm chair quarterbacks have nearly a 100% chance of NEVER being in a combat situation where rounds are going down range thank goodness the legal system ignores arm chair quarterbacks and blowhards.
The officer that discharged his rifle told the other officers as they were approaching the suspect to slow down, let me take point with the rifle.
He then fires several shots, killing the suspect that was actively tuning on a victim with a lock and cable.
A couple of things I see wrong with what happened. First and foremost, the cop comes into a department store with an AR-15. This is the type of weapon you’d want to use least in a situation like this.
5.56/.223 AR-15 cartridge has a muzzle velocity from 2700 to 3200 ft/sec. Capable of penetrating hardened targets with 296ft/lb of energy @ 500yrds depending on load.
Secondly, the officer fired several rounds at the suspect in tight quarters, one of which ricocheted off the floor into a dressing room sticking this teenager in the chest. #1 rule...what is down range from your target?
The officer will likely not be a cop much longer. Officers use hollow point ammunition in their service weapons for a reason. They are designed to penetrate the target, flair and remain. Could a .40 cal ricochet and penetrate a wall as well...yep, but with much less velocity or perhaps getting captured by the wall itself. Unlike a high velocity round used in an AR15.
My verdict...the cop was negligent.
>>Collateral damage happens it’s part of active situations.<<
Huh? Collateral damage? It was an innocent teenager you dumb @$$. Collateral damage? That is the dumbest damn thing I’ve read in quite a while.
I hope like hell you not still in law enforcement.
It’s funny. Lot’s of people here have problems with cops with this/that type of gun, in this/that type of scenario. I know damn well none of them could hack it in a situation where a 20 or 30-something, or several, were running amok with a 3 lb bicycle lock, machete, samurai sword, whatever, in a public place. ANd thdn when the inevitable call to the cops is made, no one shows up.
Oh jeez.
I absolute with zero hesitation would have ventilated this guy with my M4 at 30 or more feet.
= = =
And from 30 feet you would have bounced a round off the floor?
Collateral damage, that's what you think? What if it was your teenage daughter? If a cop said "collateral damage" after killing my daughter, I would hunt him down and kill him.
The perp wasn’t armed at the time the cop murdered that teen
I have seen plenty of stories of armed citizens doing a lot better jobs than the police.
I spent 11 years at the Fed and local LEO levels I absolute with zero hesitation would have ventilated this guy with my M4 at 30 or more feet.
