Russia’s Supreme Court ordered the country’s best-known human rights group on Tuesday to be liquidated for breaking a law requiring groups to register as foreign agents, capping a year of crackdowns on Kremlin critics unseen since the Soviet days.
The shuttering of the group Memorial closes a year in which the top Kremlin critic was jailed, his political movement banned and many of his allies forced to flee. Moscow says it is simply enforcing laws to thwart extremism and shield the country from foreign influence.
“This is a bad signal showing that our society and our country are moving in the wrong direction,” the TASS news agency quoted Memorial Board Chairman Jan Raczynski as saying.

“Like how Joe Dementia is using FBI brown shirts to terrorize conservatives in America? “
I wonder if they are also forced to spend a year (and counting) in jail if they following police hand signals.
Thanks, I figured as much. No country should permit outside influences to tear it apart...but the West sure does!
“Putin is a lot of things, a Commie is not one of them.”
Many here cannot accept that. They NEED him to be a Communist, or they feel their own lives have no value.
Usually the legal basis for "foreign agent" designation is not availeble. Petr Manyakhin who was designated a "foreign agent" himself and countered this in a court, received a legal justification from Ministry of Justice who argued that Manyakhin received funding in foreign currencies based on three USD bank transfers, which were between Manyakhin's own accounts. Further reasons given were a single retweed in support of "Meduza" and Manyakhin's 2020 article about torture in Novosibirsk police.[35]
A 2021 report by OVD-Info goes into great detail about the existing legislation and practice of its application. While the government claims that the designation does not prevent freedom of speech, and merely ensures transparency about who is speaking, the report clearly indicates that the regulation had a strong chilling effect on media, which avoid quoting organizations and individuals designated as foreign agents, and the designated themselves withdraw from public debate as result of high financial fines imposed by Roscomnadzor for example for missing a long legal disclaimer even on a social media share of someone else's post.
Furthermore, any entities designated as foreign agents are prohibited from acting as election observers, legislative experts, candidates to public supervisory commissions and other public functions. At the same time the criteria for the designation are extremely broad and vague, from actually receiving foreign grants to "participation in an international conference with accommodation at the expense of the organizer", "gift from friends or relatives living abroad" or even transfer of own funds from an own account in foreign currency

“And of course, since this was under Clinton, Time cheered it.”
I was cool with Yeltsin, as he was a big part in ridding Russia of Communism. But it should have ended there.
They always point out that he worked for the KGB, ergo, he must be a Communist.
What Putin is, is a man of ambition, and back in Soviet times, the only place for a man of ambition was the Party or the Security Aparatus. He would have just as easily served the Czar in The Okhrana, if the Czar was still in power.
And Yeltsin’s disaster ultimately led to Putin taking power.
Hey, I know that guy the Russian Police are beating the crap out of, he’s Dzhordzh Floyd.
The entire Western Propaganda Narrative could care less.
The most Evil Pederast Degenerates are Elevated to the Highest Positions of Special Protection and Influence in the West.
“And Yeltsin’s disaster ultimately led to Putin taking power.”
Except that there were many other bad actors ready to take power. No one knows if things would have been better without Yeltsin, which is why I didn’t go there.
I do tend to agree though that the breakup of the Soviet Union was badly botched, and there were a lot of missed opportunities.
Russians don't like riots and don't want anymore revolutions. Putin makes sure neither occur.
Horse Manure, all 3.
“They always point out that he worked for the KGB, ergo, he must be a Communist...He would have just as easily served the Czar in The Okhrana, if the Czar was still in power.”
Agree...as if ANYONE in power there actually believed in Communism. They all knew how pathetic it was, compared to capitalism...but it was how they stayed in power.
As to Putin serving any master, here’s an easy way to verify your claim: Just ask are we to believe that EVERYONE (or even anyone) who works for Biden believes in Capitalism? After all, they are working for a Capitalist government.
Ouch!
It is rumored that Hillary and Berezovsky picked Putin as a replacement based on the alleged honey trap by Putin against AG Skuratov who tried to indict Yeltsin for corruption. They thought Putin was a loyal globalist who was going to shield Yeltsin from prosecution after the transition and keep Yeltsin’s Clinton-tied oligarchy.

Love that Wikipedia.
That’s because your Russian perspective is very Russian.
Interesting, first time I heard that.
The Russian alt-right is convinced to our day that Putin is a CIA plant.
Even more interesting.
Could Putin be a Triple Agent so good at deception that his hidden ultimate Loyalty is to Russia First above all other Nations by any means?
