Like any meat, much of how venison tastes depends on what condition the animal was in, what it was eating, and how it was cared for and prepared.

I have had mouth watering venison, and venison I could not stomach... and I am not a picky eater.

The taste of venison can vary quite a bit. The deer’s diet is a big part, also the butchering process.

Love venison, but only doe or yearlings. Seeing as your from MA, I'm gonna guess you had a buck. Bucks harvested in fall are loaded with testosterone and adrenaline and thus I would only take antlerless deer when I hunted...very different taste. Of course as others have stated, dressing, processing, preparation and manner of cooking are also important.
Too old and crippled to hunt anymore, but I know some younger folk who will gladly donate a back strap or two if an antlerless tag were provided by somebody.

😇
