Nothing sensible about it. He’s asking for scientific reasoning and you’re talking about some tired workers? Come on, that’s not even remotely a scientific answer. That’s government and media propaganda. And laziness if you ask me. Medical workers are supposedly “heros”, well get to work you flagging heros. Do your duty and quit your whining.

No hospital system has ever crashed, in any state or province. Hospitals have been severely strained. Some full to the brim and patients had to go to other hospitals. That is not remotely hospital system collapse. Not even close. Did you see Indians dying in the streets with nowhere to go? That was systemic collapse. Did that happen anywhere in the U.S. ?

Stop coming here to spread propaganda and drama. Covid isn’t a joke, but nor is it an emergency. It’s a natural event leading to a large number of natural deaths. Ethically and politically a non-event. Viruses spread people die, it’s what supposed to happen if you are even remotely familiar with the science of biology. Follow the science right?

I think the “scientific” ( note the quotes ) reasoning of the response to Phil Mickelson’s question is based on this assumption (which in my view, does not apply to Omicron infections): Unvaccinated are getting hospitalized by several orders of a magnitude compared to the Vaccinated. Therefore, the unvaccinated are overwhelming the hospitals and crowding out necessary procedures for people with other illnesses.

Of course that response does not answer the question that Phil posed which is: “If omicron is contagious but not deadly (25,000 cases in Africa with no deaths) why try and control it?”

If it isn’t deadly, obviously, the assumption that those who are infected with it ( even the unvaxxed ) are overwhelming hospitals are wrong.

But then again to follow up with what I wrote above, consider this — Omicron is several orders of a magnitude more contagious that the previous variants.

Evidence to date suggests the symptoms of omicron are milder than other variants and fewer people will be hospitalized. That’s the good news.

But this link:

https://www.deseret.com/coronavirus/2021/12/15/22837481/omicron-variant-spreads-faster-delta-variant

tells us that Omicron spreads 70 times faster than Delta.

So, if seventy times the number of people are being infected in a short period of time than other variants, the fraction of people becoming severely sick may be lower, but the absolute number could be higher, filling up beds in ICUs.

That’s the assumption behind the twitter response to Phil Mickelson.

The British Health Security Agency Report report on Omicron transmission, which was based on an analysis of about 148,000 Delta cases and 68,000 Omicron cases, also included recent data suggesting that Omicron infections are less likely to lead to hospitalizations than Delta infections.

The findings should be interpreted cautiously, the agency has noted, because there have still not been many Omicron cases, relatively speaking, and the people who have contracted the variant may not be representative of the broader population.
