Why would you trust him? He's a politician, and a Democrat. Hell, you can't even trust anyone with an R behind their name these days.
Inviting him into the Republican Party would be a mistake. He takes the right positions on occasion because he is a Democrat trying to survive politically in a Conservative and Republican state. As such he is much more valuable as an apparently intelligent Democrat. We need him to stay right where he is organizationally.
