That was a very nice acapella version.
It was done in the perfect audio setting: inside a high ceiling church, one with smoothly arched romanesque (?) pillars, allowing the sound to mix and linger.
The sopranos after the baritones was lovely, adding to the festive feeling.

All the darkness reminded me of attending a Midnight Christmas Mass at Saint Cecilia, my neighborhood Catholic Church back in Michigan. My Dad would lead us four children to his choice of the pews. Me and my father dressed in a sport jacket, dress shirt, tie and cufflinks.

Thanks Lee..I would wager that the church is rather old.

Remarkable back then that they built them so that a voice would carry. If they knew they were doing it with those results is another matter. But you can go into most cathedrals in the UK and just about whisper and it can be heard a good ways off in there.

Thank you for this lovely Christmas gift. Reminds me of my girlhood days long ago when I lived in Switzerland with my family for awhile. Sweet memories.

To hear it as it was originally played was beautiful. The most beautiful Christmas carol ever. I’m being sincere when I say it sounded Heavenly.

That is wonderful! Thanks for posting. I studied German in 7th and 8th grades in Ithaca, NY 1963-1965 and I remember learning and singing "Stille Nacht, Heilege Nacht" in German class during school! We attended a magnificent Lutheran church on the Cornell campus that looks like a gothic cathedral, so this brings back great memories.

The two brothers singing in this recording are incredible. I love the church choir joining in on every verse after the men sing.

The YT description is very informative...

The song “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht” was first performed on 24 Dec. 1818 in “Oberndorf bei Salzburg” in public.

Second version (later in mass), with organ and people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDs5-...

In this location, the song is traditionally sung in the original version, which is different to the popular version in parts of the text and mainly in the melody, which is a third lower in the second part, and has more ornaments.

The song is sung once during the offertory by two men (here: brothers Hannes and Georg Mairoll), one of them accompanies the singing with a guitar; the church choir responds to every verse.

After mass the people sing the song again with organ accompaniment.

This recording was sung on 24/12/2016 during the offertory by two men, with the 6 original verses.
