Washington Post Discovers World War II-Era Survey, Cancels the Greatest Generation
PJ Media ^ | 22 dec 2021 | Robert Spencer

The Washington Post had a real scoop Monday: people in the 1940s held views that many would find racist and sexist today. It seems that Edward J.K. Gitre, an assistant professor of history at Virginia Tech, stumbled upon 65,000 pages of Army surveys from World War II in the National Archives. Wokescolds have now combed through them and are presenting the very worst of the “harsh views” expressed, in a project called “The American Soldier in World War II,” supported by Virginia Tech and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Post breathlessly informs us that “a lot of it runs counter to the wholesome image of the war’s ‘greatest generation.’”

....

Fox News noted, however, that there seemed to be an ulterior motive in the presentation of this “uncensored” material. “Critics took to social media to blast The Post’s framing of the surveys, with some questioning the desire to view people in the 1940s through a 21st-century lens, and others suggesting that there was now an ongoing effort to cancel the grandparents of some Americans.” Nick Timothy, a columnist for the UK’s Telegraph, tweeted: “Next you’ll be telling me William Wilberforce wasn’t in the Parliamentary LGBTQ society, and Gandhi didn’t support Black Lives Matter. Historical figures lived with different social and moral norms. This is not news, or a novel academic discovery.” ...

The Greatest Generation? Yes, they fought and won World War II and came home and made the United States the greatest power on earth, but you see, they did not hold woke attitudes.

I canceled the ‘Greatest Generation’ years ago, when they didn’t bother instilling American VALUES into their kids - instead they dumped them into ‘schools’ controlled by Leftists and looked the other way.

...and that has led DIRECTLY to where we are today.

Once you dismantle and deconstruct America’s past, values and morals - what fills the void?

Evidently this guy didn’t know very many of “The greatest generation” in the wild.

Here is a clue…they were the products of their environment.

A person must be judged within the context of his times. For example, Isaac Newton knew nothing about nuclear reactions. Does that make Isaac Newton a fool, a scientific idiot? Of course not.

They trusted the country they fought for, but never should have allowed commies to take-over the education system.

Woke Leftists are correct; most Americans in the 1940s did hold views that would get them canceled in 2021. Nothing controversial about that.

Can you imagine going back in time, and trying to explain to a young G.I. that Drag Queen Story Hour would be "normal" in 2021? He'd never believe you. He'd think you were some sort of insane pervert just for thinking up something so weird.

What is Salerno, Cassino, Volturno, Anzio, Polesti, Schweinfurt, Huertgen Forrest, Metz, the Roer, Rhine, and the Ruhr to a white institutional racist. Start purging Lee and his lieutenants and end with Eisenhower and Patton and their men.

I sought a Masters teaching degree under the GI Bill. I left in disgust—and that was in 1972!

I could hardly believe your words. My father, born in 1917, died in 2011 was a great man.

But in his last years I challenged him with one thing: WHY DIDN’T YOUR GENERATION TEACH MY GENERATION YOUR VALUES??????

He had no answer.

I think I might. The “Greatest Generation” went through two hells we cannot imagine: The Great Depression and WWII facing the great evils of both Germany and Japan.

They survived for decades of barely surviving. Decades. They lived decades not knowing if tomorrow would come. They had nothing. We cannot imagine what they went through. We are so spoiled.

When it all was finally over, and prosperity came, they hardly knew how to handle it. So what did they do? They enjoyed it. They wanted to simply forget the hells they had lived through and focus on enjoying life. So they did.

Kids? An afterthought. My mom asked my dad why he didn’t do things with his two sons: “I’ll spend time with them when they want to do what I want to do.” Which was mainly golf. And work.

Can I blame him? After all he’d been through?

No.

But I do fault them for not passing on to my generation their values. A few years behind me were the hippies, drugs, and war-protestors, leftist and ....communists.
