The rhetoric on Kremlin-funded state television is amping up the sense of urgency around Russian President Vladimir Putin’s NATO “ultimatum.” Olga Skabeeva, the host of state TV show 60 Minutes, said Tuesday: “The level of anxiety has reached its maximum. We’re 20 days away from the expiration of the ultimatum and the stakes are rising, even though it seems they couldn’t be any higher.”
One day after Moscow submitted a draft of its Russia-U.S. security treaty, containing demands that NATO roll back its military deployments in Europe and deny membership to Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov threatened that Moscow would raise the stakes if the West didn’t treat its demands seriously. On Monday, he told Interfax that Russia needs answers “urgently, because the situation is very difficult.”

Russia doesn’t have citizens.
Well did they say with who? I hope it doesn’t involve us. I have iodine pills, but I need some of that white paste SPF 20 million like lifeguards put on their nose.
“It’s simple. The U.S. and NATO must roll back from our borders, otherwise we will, figuratively speaking, ‘roll up’ to their borders and create symmetrical, unacceptable risk.
So missiles back in Cuba?
The first thing they’ll do is blast our GPS satellites out of orbit (a capability they just demonstrated 2 month ago). I suspect, at that point, we’ll get the message and start negotiating in good faith.
The nuclear war is very unlikely. Putin’s ultimatum regarding NATO hints limited strikes on the NATO infrastructure in East Europe, of them only a single target is US-operated - Redzikowo missile site in Poland.
I don’t think that Biden is going to start WWIII over a single airbase.
“I don’t think that Biden is going to start WWIII over a single airbase.”
And Russia has MANY options short of blowing up US cities. Among them are the drone submarines, which give a bit of a bump off our coasts and wipe out our cities with a tidal wave (hopefully DC included). Eventually we’ll find out what sitting on our asses militarily for 30 years means.
I think not, to Venezuela is being discussed as one of the steps. Does not make a huge difference.
Biden hands out air bases like candy. He would probably just pro actively give it to them.
Taking out aircraft carriers would be a more likely option. I am not certain China can do this, but Russia can.

I think China can too, simply with a launching a large number of missiles at once, if they choose to. But Russia, it would be a turkey shoot for them.
Bottom line is that Carriers have a place in warfare, but not against superpowers...they don’t have a prayer.
From CVS?
Concur, and surely not against deployed hypersonic capabilities. (This is why uncertainty about China — it is not clear if they have working prototypes only or something already usable).
Incidentally, as was reported on Russian TV, China endorsed Putin’s proposal — and said they want a similar deal.
Nobody wins if it goes nuclear. And nuclear superpowers don’t go to open combat because whoever is losing will use them. I think it means Russian missiles in Cuba or Venezuela. And somewhere like Kaliningrad to freak the Germans and Brits out. The Russians remember how the short range nukes terrorized Europe in the 80s.
“The Russians remember how the short range nukes terrorized Europe in the 80s.”
Their SS-20s nearly won them the Cold War. Scary how much Europe shivered at those missiles and an entire generation there (the younger people...you know, the same ones now running Europe) were ready to hand them whatever they wanted.
Negotiating what?
My point exactly. Biden has exactly three options.
The first to see military infrastructure in Eastern Europe destroyed in January. A no-good option for American prestige in the world.
Second, to double down on stupid and start a war over the first option.
The third is to yield to the ultimatum, given Putin doesn’t ask for much.
I expect the third variant.
“Negotiating what?”
How close our troops get to their borders.
See post #17.
It might be over the counter, where you have to ask the pharmacist.
