Recordings of emergency calls show Washington wildlife officials objected to an air rescue of a woman (salmon researcher) treed by wolves, or help from the Okanogan County sheriff.
She tried pepper spray and yelling (did not work) , the pack surrounded her, then she climbed a tree. She later climbed down, only to find the wolves still there. She scrambled back up the tree and called for rescue.. Government wildlife managers: No helicopter. Federally listed species. 3 WDFW personnel agree. ~ according to DNR’s call log.
Sheriff : We are more concerned for her life .. we do not know how safe she is. I don’t know how stout the tree is, and if the limbs will continue to hold her or how long she can hold on... Within a half hour, the woman was safe in the DNR helicopter.. The flight from Omak to the woman took 14 minutes.
