John Thune’s Senate career began with a thunder when he defeated Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004.
Now, it may end with a whimper.
There is growing speculation that Thune might not run for re-election in 2022. Even if he does run again, the thought of Thune retiring at some point in the future is a wake-up call for the South Dakota Republican Party, which has enjoyed an era of peace and prosperity since Thune won his seat in 2004.
More on that in a moment.
For some, talk of Thune retiring is akin to a poker player folding when he’s holding a straight flush. Only the delusional think he can be beaten in a primary or general election. Meanwhile, he is the second highest ranking member for Senate Republicans, and he would be a favorite to become the Republican Party leader at some point in his fourth term.

He has already endorsed Crapo, Grassley, Moran and Rubio for 2022.
We will never MAGA by re-electing Assistant Democrats.
Thune is a useless turd. Such a shame, because he started off solid in DC, in the House and then the Senate. Unfortunately, for the last 15 years his main thrust has been servicing his donors and his mega-donors. This turd has zero right wing ideology in his bones.
Thune retiring would be every bit as much good news as all the Democrats that are retiring. He sold his soul to the Republican establishment years ago.
Maybe the governor of South Dakota will run to fill the seat if Thune retires. I’d think he chances would be fairly good.
Get rid of that RINO and get a MAGA Republican in there.
Given that Senate terms are 6 years, he can’t do that. It ends on 1/3/2023.
We’re a Republican state, not a Communist state.
I mean win again and leave early. Has to stay on past 2024 election.
Naah, he needs to go. He’s been an embarrassment for some time. The lone at-large Congressman, Dusty Johnson, is just as bad, and he needs to go, too.
I don't believe he's retiring. At all.
Thune could briefly inherit the Majority Leadership and stay on through 2025, which would serve to keep Barrasso at bay.
As an ongoing thing, Thune/Blunt/Ernst/Scott are sorting out succession internally.
Now here's what most people don't understand.
Ky SoS Daniel Cameron wins the Nov. 2023 Ky Goobenor's race -- trouncing Lil' Andy -- and is sworn in on December 12, 2023.
Miotch immediately announces he is "retiring as Senate Majority Leader due to health problems".
Cameron ascends to Miotch's seat. Rand Paul becomes the senior Senator from Kentucky.
Thune takes over as Majority Leader for the next 13 months, but he himself resigns a week before Trump's re-inauguration on January 20, 2025.
With the GOP Senate succession already having been quietly worked out and now set in stone, either Blunt or Ernst becomes GOP Senate Majority Leader for Trump's 2nd term. My money is on Ernst.
Bannon said tonight , he hopes Mike Lindell runs for the seat .
All to recently TN was too plaid for my taste. Too many back stabbers like Lammar! Like SC, it had been very much an overhyped underacheiver on the big stage. Not that I have anything against Marsha. She's the best I've seen out of TN in quite awhile.
