ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — State regulators who three years ago issued an air quality permit for a proposed copper-nickel mine in northwestern Minnesota stood by their decision in a report released Monday that said the mine did not provide misleading information on its plans.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency report...does not clear the way for construction. Other major permits remain up in the air because of ongoing court cases or administrative work.

Even so, PolyMet CEO Jon Cherry said the action on the air permit “moves us one big step closer” to building the estimated $1 billion mine, which he said will contribute “numerous economic benefits to northeast Minnesota along with a U.S.-based supply of metals crucial for the transition to a greener economy.”....

Gotta play the name-game. The name of the game is sucking up to the green kooks.

In this case, I’ll push the propaganda to the left because it suits the transition to an electronics economy. My DH says about 1/5-1/4 of the weight of your laptop is copper-related. Who knows how much goes into an electric car - not to mention the high-voltage quick charging stations that are theoretically supposed to be as plentiful as gas stations today coupled with home and office units and storage cells. MaBell just agreed to replace buried landline phone lines that are allegedly leaking lead, which is going to mean a whole lot more copper needed for areas that still very much rely on land lines. Trains and planes to nowhere need even more copper.

This is controversial because it’s close to Boundry Waters, and some are worried about runoff from the tailings polluting the lakes there. I don’t know enough about the plans to say if it will be a problem or not, but I’ve been there and drunk water out of the lakes while canoeing and would hate to see anything bad happen.

After visiting mines in third-world countries where they don’t care about the environment or worker safety, environmentalists should welcome mining, drilling, logging, etc. in the USA where we actually have rules that are enforced.
