Who wants to sing “New York, New York” or “I Love L. A.” anymore? And can you imagine leaving your heart in San Francisco? What has happened is a true American tragedy—and it’s not just because of COVID, although that helped. The cancer has been growing for a long time.
It could be said you should stay to help resuscitate these cities although I would argue you do more for them by leaving, making those governing the cities—universally Democrats, as everybody knows—and even more those dopey enough to have voted for that governance, wake up.
And yet… and yet… and yet… moving is not easy. And I’m not just talking about the onerous task of packing up years of possessions and trucking them cross country. That’s bad enough, though transitory.
You carry yourself, your quirks and neuroses, with you wherever you go from Knoxville to Kuala Lumpur and you don’t know exactly the extent of that until you are forced, or force yourself, to change years of habit.
Just as much, the places you are going have their own quirks and neuroses, their own patterns, also established for years. Where do you fit in?
Moving from a blue state to a red state is not an instant transformation yielding spiritual and political liberation. There is work to be done—on yourself and on the locale itself.
I can speak most accurately about what it means to move to the Nashville area but I would imagine it’s a paradigm for some other migrations.
In itself Metro Nashville, as they call it, embodies the culture clash we are seeing across America. Nashville the city, contiguous with Davidson County, is decidedly blue, while neighboring Williamson County, really part of the metropolitan area—I described it earlier as “Republican Heaven”—is red...

There will only be a couple of red states in ten years...
in 987 days I retire.
the next day I move out of NY.
“There will only be a couple of red states in ten years...”
I agree with that. The only thing that changes the trajectory of this country is complete collapse.
Do what you want. Just stay out of Florida.
“Wherever you go, there you are.”
Red states ought to amend their constitutions to require new citizens to the state live there 3-5 years before being allowed to vote in state and local elections. People fleeing NY & California need time to decompress from their warped view of life before being trusted to vote in a normal state.
No offense to conservatives in blue states, but someone being crushed by rampant liberalism needs time to find their real views. Being right of the hard left isn’t the same as being “right”...
And I want a WALL built - on the WEST side of Arizona!
Good luck!
I left my poo in San Francisco.
What do you mean? Here I can’t just drop trou and crap on the sidewalk?
Last year, we moved out of California to NW Arkansas. I love it! Husband is a native Californian and misses being near the mountains.
I miss the ocean and the mountains, but not enough to live there.
The people are so nice here, and it’s clean.
Unless you’re a conservative, stay out of Texas!!!
I just spent 3 weeks driving around Florida looking for my final domicile. My wife went on a Russian Jacksonville Facebeook page and asked some questions about moving there. First response was ... if your politics match that of most of Seattle, (where we are from), dont come.
vk.com?
I just moved to Florida, and I’m fine with this. I’m content to wait until 2028 to vote for DeSantis for Prez, if that’s what it takes to encourage assimilation amongst all us transplants.
Right now I live in schizophrenic state (your punchline here). Michigan, BTW. The tri-county area is lib dem, but outside there it’s just about as conservative as you’d want it. But the tri county slobs drag the rest of us down with their stupidity. The other thing that keeps me from moving is cost of living. I’m on a fixed income and some of the areas in more conservative states would be more expensive to live in.
CC
That’s like NYS.
Most of our counties are MAGA red.
Tell any left leaning friends or family members to STAY! For goodness sake, we don’t want them. Let them stay and live in what they voted for. Do not come to live amongst us backward rednecks. You wouldn’t like it. You’re just far too sophisticated for the likes of us.
Look at Clay County (if you are not a Seattle lib). Imho the best place to live in FL.
“Red states ought to amend their constitutions to require new citizens to the state live there 3-5 years before being allowed to vote in state and local elections.”
I can get behind that one, and we just moved from Colorado to Florida.
Funny story: The Tax Collector, where ya get driver’s licenses in Florida, asked if I wanted to register to vote and “Please, select C*A*R*E*F*U*L*L*Y the party of my choosing on the computer screen.” I selected Republican, she said enthusiastically, “Welcome to Florida!” She then asked if I wanted the county, “Florida”, or “In God We Trust” on the bottom of my license plates, “”Please, select C*A*R*E*F*U*L*L*Y.” I selected in “God We Trust”, and she replied, “Welcome, again, to Florida!” I swear she looked like the Church Lady, all prim and proper with a buttoned up sweater.
