I mean natural gas has always been a byproduct of oil industries, drilling. why let it escape into the air and no one uses it?

That’s exactly why its great to use it.

When I was young, in my city there were tall stovepipes that were constantly burning off natural gas, 24 hours a day. Real pretty watching the flames at night. It was considered a waste byproduct and was burned off. They ended that sometime maybe 4 decades ago, as it became more useful as a money-maker.
