I would include James Cox and Al Smith, 1920 and 1928 Democratic Presidential candidates, in the non-socialist camp.

No, they were left-wing Socialists, too. Alton B. Parker was someone who tried to appeal to both camps when he ran in 1904, but other than that, only Davis was a non-leftist.
