Like SS, today's workers pay Medicare (Part A) for today's retirees. The premium you pay for Medicare Part B only covers 25% of the costs. The rest is subsidized by the General Fund. In 1950 there were 16 workers for every retiree; today it it less than 3; and by 2030 it will be just 2 workers for every retiree. We will have to tax our children and grandchildren to death to support SS and Medicare under the current system.

The average Medicare recipient receives three times more in benefits than they paid into the system. Medicare is unsustainable as currently structured.

Medicare Part B is optional. You could opt out, but that would be dumb. Federal retirees like myself must use Medicare as our primary insurance, but I still pay the same amount for my Federal Health Insurance plan that I would pay as a working employee. It serves as my Medigap policy and I pay no deductibles.

Nine out of ten Medicare recipients also have Medigap insurance to cover costs Medicare doesn't cover.

There are not enough people working over the age of 65 to save Medicare. In 2020 there were 62.6 million people under Medicare or 18.4% of the total US population. That number and percentage will continue to increase as our aging population increases.
