New York City is already struggling to regain the jobs it lost amid the COVID-19 pandemic — but fears are now mounting that Gov. Kathy Hochul’s new mask mandate could slow the Big Apple’s recovery even more.
The city’s current unemployment rate of 9.4 percent is more than double the national average of 4.2 percent, new state and federal data shows.
While the US added nearly 6 million jobs in the last year, the latest state data shows the Big Apple’s economic recovery lagged considerably with just 174,000 jobs regained in the 12 months through October.
The absence of visitors and Manhattan’s 1 million office workers has contributed to how severely the city’s tourism, hospitality and retail industries have been ravaged by the pandemic.

I’m in CA and when I’m invited to things like bowling or to return to the office to work, I decline as who wants to bowl (or work, if remote options are available) with a mask on?
So yes mask mandates definitely hurt the economy even though the governor of NY pretends they help instead of hurt (”because masks prevent shutdowns” she said).
I’d be spending money on bowling, shopping, eating out for lunch at work in the city if it weren’t for the mask mandates.
I dislike mask mandates MUCH more than vax mandates (although I dislike both).

My youngest brother lives and works in the restaurant business in NYC and is a solid Democrat.

I haven’t seen my brother in a long time, and we live 2 miles apart. Everything is political to him, so there are always the barbed comments, no escaping it.
Here’s the problem I experience with people like that. Even if you engage them, they are so filled with facts that aren’t so, that it’s impossible to have any kind of meaningful exchange.
They are convinced that Trump was a threat to democracy. How?
They are sure Trump was using his position to profit. From cronies in admin, (the ones that knifed him in the back?), to family deals in China, (China? Really? The China he put tariffs on?).
And then there is the Russia collusion, they don’t ever give that up, they believe it as fact, no matter what was proven.
So, he lives 2 miles away, and sadly, I find no reason to contact him.
I have a sister in law like that.
In her case she is also a pro vaxx fanatic.
After her second jab she felt great pain in her leg, spent a few weeks in the hospital where the docs could not identify the problem. Then she went home and now has been seriously ill with “something” for the past couple of months.
She will never believe the vaxx had anything to do with it—no point in trying to convince her otherwise—it looks like the damage has been done at this point.
Requiring masks again could ruin the recovery of New York???? Ya think????? Isn’t that the purpose?
