In the end, most of these lifelong politicians are far more concerned with their own hubris and what people in the swamp think about them than their voters.

Sad fact.

They only have to bother with voters during campaign season.

So true. But I do give Specter credit for holding regular town hall meetings, unscripted. I attended two of them. According to a staffer, he made it a point to hold these meetings at least once every two years in every county of the commonwealth.

I actually felt sympathetic toward him when a woman was berating him with a question about why he didn't support a feminist written one-size-fits-all policy for national divorce law. He tried to explain why certain laws (including divorce) were the purview of the states and the concept of federalism.

Honestly, I could say that I would have had better luck explaining the concept of long division to a mule. The woman kept pushing this meme to the point that most of the audience could understand why her ex-husband divorced her and finally Specter said "Lady, you've had your question and my answer and now it is time to give someone else a turn!" There was a thunderous round of applause from the audience.
