YUMA is a Republican stronghold. They have pockets, of course, but it’s a military town. I believe there is one far left Democrat on the Board of Supervisors but I will find out. We are right next to Yuma, Mohave County, and they are not as Conservative as us, but Republican.

A few years back I held a meeting with the county's movers and shakers on the issue of Amtrak's tri-weekly train that stops in town in the middle of the night. This included people from the chamber of commerce, economic development people and county politicians. All were reliably pro-growth.

I had the pleasure of spending an hour with Mayor Nicholls on this topic. He's a devout Catholic and deacon at his parish. He understands Catholic social teaching and the needs of the poor, but he also understands there has to be a limit. For practical purposes, Yuma has far exceeded the limit and the town's capabilities. The federal government is out of control on this issue.
