I was stopped by the Tokyo police on the very first morning of my very first trip there. The Japanese people have a reputation for being polite. But a black guy I know taught English in a Japanese high school for a year. He was bombarded by rude and disrespectful comments almost daily. Was that a racial thing? My friend thinks so.

I've been free roaming in Kyoto and Nara. I took the train every day to a factory I was on assignment to do some work at. The police approached me several times. Because they thought I might be lost. Yes I showed them my 5 year commercial visa when they asked for it.
