My guess is that the average California journalist has no idea who Ernie Pyle was, what he did or how he died.

That one whose D-Day pictures are iconic was in the line of heavy fire.

One of his irreplaceable film rolls was accidentally ruined by an assistant later. The ones that survived were developed and went onto the covers of Life and Time and the history books.
