I don’t know how much they talked to LE, but Mom had already cooked their goose on social media. She posted a picture of the handgun on Saturday captioned “Mom & son day testing out his new Xmas present”. Kinda does away with any claim Dad bought the gun for himself and the kid stole it.

If Freepers posting here that purchasing the handgun for a 15-year-old juvenile constituted a “straw purchase” then that was monumentally stupid.

It is not against the law to purchase a gun for a minor child, if it is kept in the household.

I should say, it depends on the state, but the legal ability of minors to possess guns is very state specific. A few states forbid them from having access in their own home. At least a couple of children were killed when a teen could not access a gun. As I recall that case was in California.

All of this Media directed attention on the gun is silly. There were multiple guns in the household.

He could, almost certainly, have taken another.

Much is unknown at this time.

Why were all the other guns taken from them? Those guns were not used in any crime.

It violates the Fourth Amendment to take guns from people other than those who committed the crime.
