If Republicans take the Senate next year, it seems to me that it would only take a few Republicans to force out McConnell as leader. All it would take is a few Republicans refusing to caucus with the rest of the Republicans until he is replaced as leader. The rest would have to go along because otherwise they would not be the majority. Which means they would not have the chairmanships that they covet, etc.

Translation: McConnell is signalling to the Dims that all they need to do is hang on and McConnell will cave to their demands and rescue them, they need not make any material compromise.
