This author is no doubt trying to find a racist angle for the closings.
Most probably correct but it 'could' be the miserable education found in schools of journalism. "Alleged" means that there is disbelief, the NEUTRAL and non-biased wording would be 'because of a stated “increasing amount of theft” at the store'. Given the SF Gate/SF Chronic, I take bias for a $1000 Alec!
They whine about not having any stores, but why would anyone open a store where stuff is stolen and employees aren’t safe? This is such a bunch of crap.
People were bemoaning the fact that north Tulsa didn’t have any grocery stores... you know, a food desert. Well, some feckless guy or group finally opened one and within 3 weeks the place was robbed. Some wag commented that it wasn’t the day he picked, but somebody won some money in their pool.
In our area city the mass media always hypes that “a new grocery store is opened”—months and months of stories about how wonderful it will be.
Then within a year it quietly closes.
Then rinse and repeat every five years.
For decades!
The leftist media still can’t help themselves - even though the issue is as clear as day, they still try to spin it as “big bad corporation” ignoring the wishes of civic organizations and citizens.
I can’t see it getting better in many cities. Once that Safeway closes, which it will, who would dare open a store in that area?
‘It’s called living in a big city run by Libs!’. Put some ICE on it......
Same is pretty much true in Costa Rica, which is generally thought of as a reasonably safe country. There is a culture of stealing anything that is not protected in Latin America. You can see it in their architecture. High fences with razor wire, bars on windows, little if any ‘front yard’.
America must look like easy pickings to criminals brought up there.
I know a family who ran a grocery store in "the hood." They had been there for 3 generations, before it turned into "the hood." It was the only grocery store for miles around.
the owners knew many of the residents, had support from local community people, preachers, etc.. They were able to keep theft relatively low and operated a fresh fruit and veggie section, even though it didn't sell much. The 3rd generation got into their 60s, and finally sold out to some Arabs, who got rid of the fruits and veggies, put in a big liquor section, and put cash registers, etc... behind plexiglass.
Castro district is the gayest part of town.
Perhaps “alleged” is OK in this context, but it does have a whiff of bias. “Claimed/Claims of theft” might be more accurate. If it isn’t proven, it is just an allegation. But there is no real reason to doubt the claim and it could be corroborated to a degree by video evidence, police reports, cash register tapes and inventory reports etc. Not to mention, this “allegation” is repeated throughout the state and Walgreens is closing several of its locations in the area citing the same “claim”. Shoplifting is out of control.
Stuff locked behind see-thru doors, press a button and someone comes- the exact reason I do not purchase batteries and other locked up items from my Wal-Mart. I buy those items else where.
