I would certainly check it over as well, however I’m guessing maybe he had a magazine feeding issue.

IIRC, that was merely a prosecution claim, so they could make another argument about intent. They were claiming he cleared the weapon at a time he clearly did not, and there were no unfired rounds found. He clearly did not move the bolt back the 4” required to clear the chamber either.
