RIGA/MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia would pay a high price for any new military aggression against Ukraine, NATO and the United States warned on Tuesday as the Western military alliance met to discuss Moscow's possible motives for massing troops near the Ukrainian border.
President Vladimir Putin countered that Russia would be forced to act if U.S.-led NATO placed missiles in Ukraine that could strike Moscow within minutes.
Ukraine, a former Soviet republic that now aspires to join the European Union and NATO, has become the main flashpoint between Russia and the West as relations have soured to their worst level in the three decades since the Cold War ended.
"There will be a high price to pay for Russia if they once again use force against the independence of the nation Ukraine," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters.
"Any escalatory actions by Russia would be a great concern to the United States..., and any renewed aggression would trigger serious consequences."
Tensions have been rising for weeks, with Russia, Ukraine and NATO all staging military exercises amid mutual recriminations over which side is the aggressor.

with Russia. They are massing on our border says Putin!
President Vladimir Putin countered that Russia would be forced to act if U.S.-led NATO placed missiles in Ukraine that could strike Moscow within minutes.
Russian missiles could strike Ukraine in how many seconds??
Putin has made it clear regarding Nato and his ‘red line’ Ukraine. He’s never deviated from that position.
Ukraine has been a cancer on US foreign policy and US domestic policy, since the CIA color-revolution in 2014.
It was the source of Steele’s phony dossier
It was the source for the fake information from “Ukrainian Businessman” Konstantin Kilimnik, that Paul Manafort was a Russian spy (thus allowing spying on Trump)
It was the source of NSC “whistleblower” Alex Vindman
It was at the root of the fake “impeachment” hearings against Trump
It was the source of Hunter and Joe Biden’s most obvious corruption (Burisma)
Now the US Deep State is using Ukraine to wage proxy war on Russia, a nuclear power
If anyone thinks “defending” Ukraine will lead to positive results for the US Republic or for conservatives, you are deluded, and you are being used.
Ukraine will always be a debtor count.....IMF has a stronghold on them economically and that will never change.
If Russia doesn’t attack Ukraine then nothing will happen.
All the posturing is fun and all but everything that might happen hinges on Russia starting the problem.
Seems to me Putin wants license to invade Ukraine and he’s irked that the rest of the world doesn’t like it when a dictator invades a sovereign country. Even if we’re not particularly fond of that country.
Again, if Russia doesn’t invade Ukraine then there’s nothing more to worry about.
My advice to Russia is not to invade Ukraine.
that's false. As I pointed out, the cancer that is Ukraine will continue and grow on the US body politic
The world would be much better off if the west were to abandon Ukraine politically and make them hold their own in geopolitical situations (e.g. they would actually have to provide value to their partners to counteract all of their bluster).
The best advice would be for Ukraine stop killing their own citizens and stop trying to punch above their weight internationally.
I’m in favor of the US quitting NATO. The EU aspires to being a global power to rival the United States. Let them. But in that case America should not help. And, besides, America has been in Europe too long, and the USSR and Warsaw Pact are no more.
Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll nuke DC.
Thank god that corrupt place doesn’t have nukes.
The Kiev regime is the prime mover here. They do not recognize that they lost the Crimea and Donbass. They are likely to attack, and that’s when Russia will roll in.
Kiev should just be happy with what they gained in the coup and call it a day. A coup doesn’t automatically give you everything the old nation had. You only get what you can gain by force.
The reason? Because everyone else has that SAME exact right to grab what they can too. And the people of Donbass and Crimea did just that.
If Kiev doesn’t try to conquer more of old Ukraine, the Russians won’t be moving.
Spot on.
