MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's navy successfully test-fired a prospective hypersonic missile, the military said Monday.
The Defense Ministry said that the Admiral Gorshkov frigate in the White Sea launched the Zircon cruise missile, hitting a practice target 400 kilometers (215 nautical miles) away. The launch was the latest in a series of tests of Zircon, which is set to enter service next year.
President Vladimir Putin has said Zircon would be capable of flying at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). Putin has emphasized that its deployment will significantly boost the capability of Russia's military.
Zircon is intended to arm Russian cruisers, frigates and submarines. It is one of several hypersonic missiles under development in Russia.

Which means anything that hits it is hitting it at 9 times the speed of sound.

Who cares, is it a woke diverse missile?? If not, we are not worried. We have the most woke diverse military of all times.

Not sure why this is such a big deal. We were playing around with these hypersonic thingy’s in the 1970’s and I am quite sure we either have or can develop a system quickly if we do not already have one.
Keep in mind adversarial countries in an attempt to get info on a potential enemy in the weapons area will announce the development of something in the hopes (in this case) we will respond with info claiming we have the same capability.
Usually the military releases a very limited accounting of our weapons inventory and what they do release is mainly obsolete with other and newer technology already available.
Doesn’t our current railgun technology do this? And if we are moving to lasers weapons, won’t the hypersonic technology be obsolete before it is even implemented?
